Green Operations
As an enterprise in the ICT industry, ZTE is charged with the responsibility of improving energy use efficiency and leading the industry in energy conservation and consumption reduction. As early as 2005, ZTE established an environmental management system based on ISO14001 and obtained third-party certification. The company strictly complies with applicable national and local environmental laws and regulations, and monitors the emission of waste gas, waste water, and noise on a regular basis every year to ensure compliance.
Energy and Resource Management
To strengthen energy management and audit, ZTE has established an energy conservation and emission reduction project team and built a comprehensive energy management system. We have completed energy consumption identification, energy audit, compliance evaluation, performance monitoring, internal audit, and management review. On this basis, we have released various standards for energy conservation, emission reduction, energy management, and green production to solidify the related processes and regulations. By analyzing the company's energy consumption, we formulate energy conservation measures to continuously improve energy efficiency. In addition, we keep developing professional persons to support the company in energy conservation and emission reduction.
To save electricity, we have transformed the pump motors and cookers in kitchens, and added the energy-recovery function to the high-temperature equipment. To save water, we have developed and improved related regulations and applied the latest water-saving technologies and devices. Moreover, we perform water balance tests on a regular basis to ensure that pipe networks are free of leaks.
In addition to the direct measures, we also make efforts to raise employees' resource conservation awareness, including the publicity of electricity and water conservation information through the company's intranet and emails, give warnings when there is resource waste, and organize energy conservation and emission reduction activities.
ZTE has been working on energy conservation through technological improvement and elimination of processes with high energy consumption. For example, we implement the cool water storage project, effectively tapping the off-peak electricity at night for refrigeration using the cool water storage machine set, which includes six 1200RT and one 600RT. The effective volume is 9072 m3, equaling 27,000 RTh of cool storage capacity. The project greatly reduces the electricity bill and increases the comprehensive energy efficiency by adjusting use time of 7.72 million kW of electricity to the off-peak hours. Good social and economic benefits are thereby generated.
According to related statistics,From 2016 to 2019, ZTE has exceeded the objectives of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology by formulating energy-saving and emission reduction solutions to reduce carbon emissions. We take measures first in Shenzhen and then promote the successful practices to other cities in China, completing technological improvement in terms of air-conditioning, water cool storage, and lighting.

Application of New Energy Technologies
As mobile networks gains popularity among the public, higher requirements are posed for data storage and transmission. The energy-saving of data centers plays a vital role in the sustainable development of the entire environment. Facing such a great challenge, we tap into our powerful technologies and rich experience, and proactively promote research and practice of energy conservation in data centers, gaining extensive recognition in the industry.
We have launched ZEGO, a new-generation green data center solution. Applying energy efficiency–improving technologies, the ZEGO micromodular data center solution keeps the power usage effectiveness (PUE) below 1.1, saving energy by 30% or above. It helps global customers further improve the energy efficiency of internet data centers (IDC).
Since 2009, ZTE has been exploring the new-energy vehicle industry in depth. We make contributions to the development of power batteries and materials, wireless charging, smart transportation and the Internet of Vehicles, as well as new-energy buses, boosting green living in cities.
PowerMaster ONE: New-Generation Hybrid Power Solution
ZTE has launched PowerMaster ONE, a new-generation hybrid power solution, to help telecom operators to improve network energy efficiency and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). The solution adopts an integrated design and allows the use and management of multiple sources of energy, such as transmission grids, solar energy, wind energy, and stored energy. In addition, iEnergy, network energy management software developed by ZTE based on cloud technology, is incorporated into the solution to enable real-time monitoring of the whole communication network, thus achieving visualized and delicacy management of network energy.
Energy Master Solutions
ZTE is committed to providing one-stop and all-round services for network power supply and energy management, and delivering eco-friendly, low-cost, and highly-reliable power supply solutions for telecommunications sites. In 2016, to help one of our customers reconstruct the power supply system, ZTE provided a series of energy master solutions to equip the sites with indoor integrated cabinets. In this way, we covered the remote sites with powerful electricity grid, enabling access to reliable power, integrated control, and remote intelligent management.
Before reconstruction, the base stations were installed with multiple new energy power supply systems. However, the absence of integrated management hindered the optimal use of the electricity generated by solar and wind energy, and blocked the back-end control and monitoring of the equipment operating condition at the site. As a result, the sites were interrupted or out of service frequently. The energy master solutions meet the demand load by enabling input of hybrid energy and output in various forms, and integrating multiple energy storage devices.
Products and corporate standards for energy conservation test requirements for a series of telecommunications products. These are produced in line with customer requirements and technical energy conservation indicators of international, Chinese, and industry standards. From design to verification, we have ensured that our products conform to the certification requirements outlined by the Energy-related Products Directive (2009/125/EC), Code of Conducts for Broadband Communication Equipment, the US Department of Energy (DOE), California Energy Commission (CEC), Energy Star, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Australia Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), and Energy Conservation Certification (CECP).
In the 5G era, universal connectivity between everything will create a multiplier effect for the positive development of both society and the environment. However, the subsequent massive volumes of data produced will generate exponential growth of power consumption. This is a severe challenge for operators and a vital obstacle to the advancement of 5G development. As a one-stop provider of endto-end 5G commercial products and solutions, ZTE has provided complete energy-saving solutions for operators from the five aspects of network architecture, software, chips, parts, and supporting products, to help reduce emissions, enhance efficiency, and lower environmental impact.
In the equipment room of a base station, the base station equipment takes up over 50% of the power consumed. Among this equipment, AAU/RRU accounts for over 80% of power consumption. As technology progresses and the industry chain increasingly develops, the development and application of advanced PA systems, specialized baseband chips, and highly integrated TRX chipsets will greatly reduce the power consumption of AAU, making this a key effective approach to enhance the efficiency of the whole equipment.
In 2019, our self-developed multi-mode 3.0 "soft baseband" chip adopted the 7nm process to provide an innovative chip-based solution to the issue of high equipment power consumption. Together with ZTE's new-generation ceramic filter, its antenna filter integration unit, and new heat dissipation materials and structure, the whole device has an energy consumption level more than 25% lower than the previous generation of products.
Carbon Emissions Management
Our carbon emissions mainly come from direct emissions produced by our consumption of natural gas, gasoline, and diesel, and indirect emissions from our purchased electricity. To strengthen the management of carbon emissions, ZTE implements the Management Regulations on Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction.
For our production management, we have put in place a system of energy management centers to automatically collect energy consumption data and upload it to the data center through a remote metering and transmission system, and utilized management software for online monitoring, statistical analysis, efficiency evaluation, report generation, and other information-based intelligent management. On the basis of monthly progress reporting on energy consumption and conservation, we have optimized power utilization structures, applied and upgraded energy conservation technologies and equipment, and advanced energy planning at the project infrastructure stage to perform practical energy management. In 2019, this system was established in operation and production bases like Shenzhen Science and Technology Park, Xili Industrial Park, and Heyuan Production Base.
In the fight against climate change, one of the greatest challenges facing mankind, ICT plays an indispensable part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the leading enterprises in the ICT industry, ZTE spares no efforts in this regard. On the one hand, we take various measures to reduce greenhouse gases generated by ourselves, on the other hand, we develop green products, green technologies, and green solutions through multi-level technology innovations to help customers and the whole society reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2013, ZTE became one of the earliest enterprises to join the Shenzhen carbon emission trading system. Based on its carbon emission rights, ZTE has calculated its greenhouse gas emissions in Shenzhen, worked out a greenhouse gas emission list, and prepared a greenhouse gas emission report. After the third-party examination of the report, ZTE has obtained the certificate and a quota of carbon emission.
