ZTE Corporation, a provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has clinched an exclusive bid to provide Emcali solutions to expand WiMAX (News - Alert) coverage. With this agreement, Emcali aims to build the country's first WiMAX 16e network.
Emcali can offer WiMAX mobile services along with fixed line phone services, network transmission and IPTV (News - Alert) businesses, once the project is completed. As an increasing number of telecom operators worldwide put extra efforts advanced WiMAX technology, Emcali joins that group with this agreement.
With this, Emcali looks to cater to the users' needs for highly advanced mobile wireless communication services. A press release from the company quotes Pyramid Research, which states that the global WiMAX subscribers will grow from over 2.1 million in 2007 to 41 million in 2012. Here, the emerging markets will account to 57 percent of all customers by 2012.
According to the agreement, ZTE will exclusively provide Emcali the network equipment in developing comprehensive commercial network services and advanced WiMAX technologies in Colombia. The project also requires ZTE to provide WiMAX base stations with which Emcali can provide extensive mobile wireless coverage in the Colombian regions of Cali and Popayan.
The only Chinese company among the 15 Board of Directors in the WiMAX Forum (News - Alert), ZTE is one of the biggest champions in the WiMAX industry. ZTE achieved important milestones in Singapore in early 2006 by developing the mobile WiMAX network in the island state, one of the first commercial trial networks worldwide. In 2007, the company secured a major WiMAX terminal procurement contract with Sprint Nextel (News - Alert), the third largest mobile operator in the United States.
