China Telecom, the largest fixed network telecom operator and the second largest telecom operator in China, and Shanghai Media Group (SMG), the leading Chinese broadcasting and television operator, have officially started the allocation of IPTV-enabled phone numbers in Shanghai, indicating that the operator磗 IPTV network is now available for commercial use. This marks a new stage of IPTV application in China and as such has attracted worldwide attention.
As a leading provider of communication equipment and solutions, ZTE has supplied Shanghai Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, and SMG with IPTV equipment for 49,000 lines. This represents 49% of the 100,000 lines capacity which Shanghai Telecom is building and further enhances ZTE磗 profile in the commercialisation of IPTV. Previously, ZTE has been in the leading position in the sector of the Chinese market, having received IPTV orders in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shanxi.
Shanghai Telecom hopes to have 80,000 subscribers by the end of this year. If the target is achieved, Shanghai IPTV network is likely to become both the largest commercial network in China, and the largest H.264 standard-base IPTV network in the world. China Telecom has already begun expansion of IPTV services in 7 cities.
