ZTE Corporation, one of China’s leading telecommunications equipment manufacturers, received double honour in recent industry rankings in China. The company was ranked number one in the “Top 10 Telecom Manufacturers” ranking, and its CEO, Mr. Hou Wei Gui, came first in the “Top 10 Industry Leaders” ranking. Both rankings were compiled by Communications Weekly, a well-known telecom newspaper under MII (the Ministry of Information Industry). “Differentiation strategy is key to ZTE’s continual growth in the year 2002”, the newspaper editorial points out, “ZTE has made remarkable achievements in the fields of CDMA, PHS and handsets in 2002, which helped it survive the tough year and even reach profitability.” Another factor contributing to ZTE’s success is its multi-level products structure, Communications Weekly says. ZTE currently has a wide range of telecom products, such as data, mobile and optical transport, which keeps it from being too centralized in any particular field and thereby diversifies risk. In 2002, ZTE continued its rapid growth and development through its efficient product strategy, powerful international marketing campaign and improved internal efficiency. A multi-level product structure covering high, middle and low-end products has been established; mobile, data and optical products have become the company’s new growth points; CDMA, PHS, handsets, and value-added services have largely sharpened the company’s competitive edge. Communications World, another well-known telecom magazine in China also announced the ranking of “2002 China’s Top 10 Telecom Enterprises with Most Potential”, in which ZTE ranked No. 2.The magazine says ZTE’s core competitive edge lies in its “ recent breakthroughs in R&D and applications of CDMA technology. ZTE is now the biggest native CDMA products vendor in China and at the same time, has invested significant resources in mobile communication, data communication and optical communication. ” The key criteria Communications World used in its appraisal included whether the enterprise owns core technologies, whether it enjoys profitability and market share growth in recent years and how the enterprise’s revenue has grown in the past few years.
