Nepal Telecom, Nepal´s largest telecoms operator, is to replace a range of existing GSM value-added service equipment with systems from ZTE Corporation (Shenzhen: 000063, Hong Kong: 0763), the fastest growing global provider of telecommunications equipment and solutions.
ZTE will supply Nepal Telecom with a range of value-added services equipment including 1,300,000 lines of HLR (Home Location Register), 1,000,000 lines of WIN (Wireless Intelligent Network), 300,000 lines of SMC (Short Message Centre), 500,000 lines of VMS (Voice Mail System) and 400,000 lines of CRBT (Colour Ring Back Tone).
The networks, due for completion by December 18, 2005 will enable Nepal Telecom to provide improved WIN, SMC and VMS services to its GSM subscribers across the country, and polyphonic ringtone services to all GSM users in Katmandu, Nepal´s capital and largest city.
"ZTE ´s advanced service platform, and high quality polyphonic ringtone services, the first we have implemented, will help us to enlarge our subscriber base and improve the nation´s telecoms development, " said Mr Sugat Ratna Kansakar, managing director of Nepal Telecom.
ZTE´s polyphonic ringtone system, launched less than three years ago, has now attracted more than 50 million subscribers worldwide.
"We believe the value-added services platform will not only bring broad access to value-added services to the people of Nepal, but also revenue-generating opportunities to Nepal Telecom." noted Mr Sabin Shrestha, chief representative of ZTE Nepal.
In 2004, ZTE won the biggest CDMA contract in Nepal´s telecom history, under which, ZTE would supply CDMA2000 1X equipment to build a state-of-the-art network to cover the country´s major populated areas. In April 2005, ZTE signed an agreement with Nepal Telecom to bring the first mobile data services to Nepal.
ZTE´s value-added services include polyphonic ringtone services, intelligent networks, SMS, 3G services, and comprehensive service management platforms. ZTE is a major global player in the value-added services market with installations including the world´s largest GSM SMS centre and Asia´s largest SMS gateway both in China.
