PARTNER INTERVIEW: In the lead up to Mobile World Congress, Mobile World Live spoke to Zhang Jianguo, SVP and GM of wireless product operations for ZTE (pictured, below), who highlighted its pre-commercial 5G milestones as well as the need for operators to embrace the standalone option to maximise the low latency and network slicing benefits of the next-generation technology.
ZTE believes that 5G will reshape the human society, not only bringing super-fast mobile networks, but also greatly expanding the applications of mobile technology in IoT. 5G networks will become an enabler of Internet of Everything. And ZTE believes that 5G will be a huge market. That’s why 5G is at the core of ZTE’s strategy for the future. ZTE strives to be a leader in 5G innovations.
ZTE has said its 5G smartphones, tablets, and customer premises equipment are already in development, with the Chinese tech company pushing for either late 2018 or early 2019 for launch.
ZTE unveiled a full series of 5G base stations at Mobile World Congress 2018, marking a milestone for the technological innovation of wireless base stations and facilitating commercial 5G deployment.
The vendor said the new 5G base stations have passed trials in China and other countries BARCELONA–ZTE has unveiled its series of new-generation 5G base stations at Mobile World Congress 2018, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, this week.
ZTE has just announced two new smartphones at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the ZTE Blade V9 and Blade V9 VITA. These two smartphones sport a very design (build material differences), and the ZTE Blade V9 VITA is both smaller and inferior to the Blade V9. Having said that, the Blade V9 is made out of metal and glass, while the Blade V9 VITA sports a metal unibody build. They both sport a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and a dual camera setup on the back. ZTE’s branding is visible on the back side of both devices, and these two phones aren’t exactly bezel-less, but their bezels are not that thick at all. Both devices utilize on-screen navigation buttons, while you will find physical keys on the right side of both devices.
In addition to announcing the Blade V9 and Blade V9 VITA smartphones, ZTE has also decided to announce its first Android Go handset at MWC 2018, the ZTE Tempo Go. Now, as this smartphone is a part of Google’s Android Go project, it means that it ships with a lightweight version of Android, and some Android Go applications out of the box, which is considerably lighter than Google’s regular apps. Android Go project was first talked about back at Google I/O 2017, while Google officially announced it at the end of last year.
ZTE arrived at the latest iteration of Mobile World Congress to announce a plethora of new products and showcase multiple hi-tech solutions, including its prototype of a 5G-ready smartphone. While the company already managed to break the gigabit mark last year, its latest invention supports download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, with ZTE describing it as the first glimpse at “the mobile 5G future.” The company hasn’t shared many specifics about the handset itself but was more interested in talking about its general vision for the next generation of mobile networks, claiming mobile devices of the future won’t just offer high-speed download rates but will also be able to leverage 5G networks in order to “see, hear, think, and understand” what their users want. The 5G phone prototype that’s being showcased at MWC 2018 is the latest result of ZTE’s efforts to commercialize such an offering by early 2019.
ZTE is among the many smartphone makers who are launching budget priced devices that use Google’s Android Go, a version of Android 8 Oreo that has been developed to run on handsets that have 1 GB of RAM or less. This specific handset, revealed as part of MWC 2018, is the ZTE Tempo Go, and it is supposed to be on sale right now at the company’s website for the unlocked priced of $79.99.
